Cardiology Nurses

The Cardiology Nurses are a critical part of the way the Division of Pediatric Cardiology functions. They handle the majority of patient related telephone calls and are also the Transplant Coordinators involved in most aspects of cardiac transplantation in children.

Clinical experience

Emily has been a staff nurse and intensive care nurse and worked in the pediatric cardiac catheterization laboratory. For the past 8 years she has been the senior pediatric cardiac transplant coordinator and has accumulated experience in the telephone management of pediatric problems related to children with heart disease and cardiac transplantation.

Research experience

Emily has participated in clinical research projects within the Division of Pediatric Cardiology and is co-author on 8 papers and 5 abstracts and has also given invited lectures on cardiac transplantation in children.

Marian Shearrow, RN

Marian has had extensive experience in many aspects of pediatric nursing, including the Newborn Intensive Care Unit and Emergency room. She has had 11 years of experience in pediatric cardiology in the cardiac catheterization laboratory and as a cardiac transplant coordinator. She has also been involved in cardiology telephone management for this time.

Staff nurse: Primary Children’s Hospital Float Pool with specialization in the pediatric intensive care unit and the immunocompromised service line.

Clinical Experience:

Kelly has had over 10 years experience in many aspects of pediatric nursing including the pediatric intensive care unit, post surgical cardiac care and patient-family education.  She has been the Fetal Heart Coordinator since September 2006 with formalization of the Fetal Heart Center.

April McDonald, RN

PICU Staff Nurse, Lifeflight Nurse, Cardiac Surgery Educator, Infant Unit Nurse Educator, and Medical Unit Nurse Educator.

Clinical Experience

April worked as a staff nurse in the Pediatric Cardiology Intensive Care Unit (PICU) for 21 years. She was one of the original flight nurses on the pediatric transport team. She has worked with the cardiac surgery team as a nurse/educator. Prior to coming to cardiology, she spent the last several years as a Nurse Educator for the Infant and the Children's Medical Unit. She has worked in telephone management of pediatric cardiology since November 2006.
